Home Education at North Hayne Farm
Are you looking for the perfect place to visit whilst home educating? Here at North Hayne Farm we offer a chance for you to step away from your routine and enjoy a quieter, more meaningful kind of learning. Where your children can explore, discover and grow through real life farm experiences.
Why North Hayne Farm is great for those who home school:
North Hayne Farm offers home-educated children a unique opportunity to learn through real-life, hands-on experiences in a working farm environment. Rather than relying solely on textbooks or classroom-based study, children can explore nature, care for animals, and take part in purposeful daily activities that naturally support a wide range of curriculum subjects.
The setting encourages curiosity, independence, and practical learning, making it an engaging and memorable way to support home education. It is also a welcoming and inclusive environment, suitable for children with autism and additional learning needs, ensuring that a wide range of learners can feel supported and thrive.
What children can learn through farm life:
Communication & Language
Communication and language skills develop through conversation, storytelling, and observation. Children are encouraged to describe what they see, ask our team questions, and share their experiences, building confidence with language and social skills in a natural setting.
Physical
Children move confidently around the farm, opening hutches and gates, collecting eggs, exploring outdoors, completing activity trails, and using our outdoor play equipment. These activities support coordination and control, while daily routines such as handwashing and hygiene encourage independence and help children learn how to stay safe and healthy.
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
A key part of North Hayne Farm is daily animal care, where children build confidence through feeding routines. They develop social skills such as cooperation, turn-taking, and independence while learning appropriate behaviour around others and animals. Older children can take on extra responsibilities, helping build self-esteem. Achievement is celebrated with weekly certificates and daily reward stickers.
Mathematics
Simple farm activities such as counting buckets, comparing quantities, and thinking about time help children develop early maths skills. They also explore size, weight, and number through comparing animals and feed, supporting understanding of number, shape, space, and measure in a practical way.
Science
The world of science comes to life through observing animals, understanding life cycles, and seeing how nature changes day to day. From new arrivals in Spring to seasonal shifts across the year, there's always something to notice and talk about.
Understanding of the World
This supports children in making sense of their environment through curiosity, exploration, and observation. They can learn about themselves and others, notice similarities and differences, and develop understanding of animals, plants, and how they change. Activities such as Welly Walks, the outdoor sensory trail, and the Stick Man Hunt further encourage investigation and discovery.
Expressive Arts and Design
In addition to designing their own feeding time clean hands stickers, the indoor play barn encourages imaginative play through role play, music, and books. The Art Gallery supports creativity through drawing, painting, and making artwork, with seasonal activity workshops offering hands-on experiences such as crafting, mud play and planting. Our bake box provides all the equipment you need to support home economics.
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
For older children, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 activity packs are available from the farmhouse reception, along with outdoor trails and bug hunts, all designed to link to the National Curriculum and support learning in an active, outdoor setting.
Learning Through the Seasons
One of the most special parts of staying with us is how the experience changes throughout the year. Each season brings something different for families to see, notice, and enjoy together.
- Spring
In Spring, the farm feels full of new life with orphan lambs and chicks arriving on site. The season feels like it has well and truly arrived. Children can experience bottle feeding our orphan lambs, meet our chicks, help with gentle animal feeding, and spend time learning about life cycles in a hands-on way. It’s a wonderful time for curiosity, questions, and close-up encounters with the animals and nature as the year gets under way. - Summer
In Summer, long days and warmer weather mean plenty of time outdoors. Families can explore the farm, follow sensory trails and nature walks, enjoy outdoor play, and take part in seasonal activities while making the most of the open space and fresh air. Borrow a beach clean bag and instil a sense of community while cleaning any one of our local beaches. Come along on one of our Bat walks at the farm and learn about one of natures truly fascinating mammals. Inspire a sense off wonder with an evening hire of our BBQ and Stargazing lodge, discovering the night sky with our stargazing pack to help guide you. - Autumn
In Autumn, the farm slows into a cosy rhythm with changing colours and harvest time. It’s a great season for bug hunts, woodland-style exploring welly walks, conker painting, and noticing how nature shifts around them, as well as enjoying the calmer atmosphere on the farm. - Winter
In Winter, everything becomes quieter and more reflective, creating space for slower days together. Families often enjoy cosy time in the cottages, gentle sensory experiences, stargazing on clear nights, and simply enjoying time together away from the rush of everyday life.
A Day in the Life at North Hayne Farm
A home-educated child’s day at North Hayne Farm can be structured enough to feel organised, but flexible and relaxed so learning feels natural, fun, and stress-free for parents and carers.
We’ve put together a little itinerary to help you plan your days, although there’s really no need to overthink it.
- 9:00 AM - Animal Feeding Routine
Start the day with the animals! Children take part in a fun daily feeding routine, learning which food goes to which animal while building confidence, memory, and responsibility along the way. After a good hand wash, there’s a well-earned reward sticker designed by past young visitors. If your child is inspired to get creative then we will produce a sheet of their own sticker design to help support engagement, pride and confidence in themselves. - 10:00 AM - Free Ranger Exploration
Next, children head off as “free rangers” to explore. From bug houses and musical instruments to dens, open lawns and play spaces, the farm becomes a giant outdoor classroom filled with imagination, movement, and discovery.
- 12:30 PM - Lunch at the Cottage
Time to refuel in your cosy, fully equipped cottage. Why not borrow our Bake Box and get creative with your children as they develop independence through simple cooking tasks with you in your cottage. Need more provisions then head out to local farm shops and butchers for fresh, local ingredients and enjoy. It's not just our guests that need refuelling. At certain times of year, children can help feed lambs with Farmer Roger and Farmer Emily - a truly unforgettable experience.
- 2:00 PM - Trails, Challenges & Farm Fun
Take one of our activity trails packed with clues to challenge and reward with surprises around every corner. Our current trail will be themed on our annual book of the year. A specially selected story that helps support tolerance, understanding and kindness. Borrow our book of the year to further support our themed activity trails. - 4:00 PM - Play, Relax & Rest
With a little time to spare before the next animal feeding session you could choose to unwind after a full day of exploring with some relaxation and fun in your own hot tub. Choose a book from our well equipped play barn and sit with your little one to read a story, or head outside for some outdoor play, or discover our indoor play barn if the weather changes. It’s the perfect balance of fun, freedom, and downtime. - 6:00 PM - Evening Animal Feed
Round off the day by returning to the animals for evening feeding time, reinforcing routine, care, and confidence. - Evening - Dinner & Family Time
After a full day of adventure and learning, families enjoy a relaxed evening meal together before winding down for the night - tired, happy, and full of stories from the day. Not quite ready to put your feet up then our BBQ and Stargazing lodge makes for special evening either with a full BBQ or simply toasting marshmallow before gazing up at the night sky learning about our solar system or just looking out for shooting stars.
